The Utsunomiya Gyoza Kaido Walking Tour is a self-guided route through central Utsunomiya, the Tochigi prefecture capital widely promoted as Japan's 'Gyoza City' since the 1990s. Utsunomiya Tourist Information Center provides a free walking map that lays out Miyajimacho-dori, informally called Gyoza Kaido, where dozens of independent gyoza restaurants cluster within walking distance of Utsunomiya Station. Visitors typically stop at three to four shops along the route, sampling different styles ranging from crisp pan-fried yaki-gyoza to boiled sui-gyoza and deep-fried age-gyoza, each shop serving small plates of five to six pieces so multiple stops remain manageable in one outing. A common mid-route stop is the Utsunomiya Gyozakai Kirasse food hall near the station, which gathers sampler plates from several member restaurants under one roof, useful for visitors short on time. The route can also detour past the bronze Gyoza Statue near the station's west exit, a popular photo point. Because the tour is self-guided, there is no fixed language support beyond the printed map and shop menus, some of which include English or picture menus; pace is entirely up to the visitor and typically runs two to three hours including walking between shops. Food and drink purchased at each restaurant are not included in any package price; the only included item is the printed route map itself. Dietary substitutions depend on individual restaurants — most gyoza contain pork and garlic, and shops rarely offer vegetarian versions, so visitors with restrictions should ask at each counter before ordering.
