The gorge trail begins directly outside the station and follows the Kinugawa River through a narrow ravine lined with volcanic rock formations, suspension bridges, and seasonal wildflowers. A typical day starts with a morning train departure to arrive at the trailhead by late morning, allowing time to walk the main gorge trail, which takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours round trip at a relaxed pace with several suspension bridge crossings and viewpoints over the river. The trail has some uneven sections and stairs but no serious elevation gain, making it accessible to most fitness levels. Midday suits a rest stop at one of the small trailside teahouses or the station-area shops before continuing further along the gorge or heading back. Late October through early November brings peak autumn foliage reflected in the river gorge, drawing the heaviest visitor numbers of the year, while June offers fresh green (shinryoku) season with fewer crowds and comfortable hiking temperatures before the summer humidity sets in. Food options are limited near the gorge itself, so visitors often bring light snacks or plan to eat before departing Kinugawa-Onsen Station, where restaurants are more plentiful; a few simple noodle stalls operate near the Ryuokyo trailhead during peak seasons. Because the gorge sits directly beyond Kinugawa Onsen on the same rail line, many visitors combine the two stops in a single day, walking the gorge trail first while energy levels are higher and finishing with a relaxed soak or riverside walk back in Kinugawa Onsen. Rental car visitors can park near the trailhead, though the train connection is generally simpler given the narrow mountain roads in the area.
