Lake Tanuki Diamond Fuji Reflection

Lake Tanuki sits in the Asagiri Highlands near Fujinomiya, on the western flank of Mount Fuji, and is one of the most reliable "Diamond Fuji" viewpoints in Japan, where the rising sun appears to balance briefly on the mountain's summit before flaring into a diamond-like burst. The alignment only occurs within roughly a week either side of April 20 and August 20, so the shooting window is narrow and weather-dependent; foreground compositions typically place the still lake surface in front, using the mirror reflection of both Fuji and the rising sun to double the effect, with the tree line along the shore providing a dark anchor at the frame's edges. Best results come on windless mornings, since even light ripple breaks up the reflection; arriving well before sunrise, around 5:00-6:00 AM, is necessary to set up and to meter for the extreme dynamic range of shooting almost directly into the sun. Because the event is well known among Japanese landscape photographers, the limited shoreline access points fill up in the dark on forecast-clear mornings, and visitors should expect to share space with a line of tripods; arriving early and picking a shoreline spot ahead of time helps. There is no fee to access the public lakeshore, tripods are permitted, and overnight parking is limited, so photographers usually arrive by car from Fujinomiya before dawn. Drone use near the lake is restricted given the proximity to a Self-Defense Forces training area at nearby Higashi-Fuji.
