Kawazu Nanadaru Waterfalls

Kawazu Nanadaru is a chain of seven waterfalls along the upper Kawazu River on the Izu Peninsula, connected by a forest walking trail with suspension bridges and viewing platforms at several of the falls, including the largest, Ebi-daru and Kama-daru. Long-exposure shots of the cascades, smoothing the water into a soft blur against the surrounding moss and rock, are the signature composition here, typically framed vertically to include the forest canopy above; overcast midday light works best, since the tree cover already creates deep shade and direct sun produces harsh, blown highlights on the white water against dark rock. Late May into early June brings the freshest green foliage along the trail, while November brings autumn colour to the maples lining the river; the trail can be slick and shaded year-round, so a tripod with good ground contact is more important than fast shutter speeds. The trail draws steady visitor traffic, particularly at the more accessible lower falls near the trailhead, with quieter conditions at the upper falls that require more walking; a weekday visit reduces the number of people crossing the suspension bridges within frame. There is a fee to access parts of the trail near the largest falls, tripods are permitted throughout, and a rain cover or weather-sealed body is worth carrying given the mist thrown off the falls themselves. Drone flights are not permitted within the forested gorge.
