Atami Hot Spring Resort

Atami is a hot spring resort town on Shizuoka Prefecture's eastern coast, about 100 km from Tokyo and reachable in 40-50 minutes by Tokaido Shinkansen (Kodama or Hikari services) or roughly 1 hour 40 minutes by the slower JR Tokaido Main Line. Built around a natural harbor backed by hillside ryokan, Atami has drawn hot spring visitors since the Edo period and today mixes traditional onsen inns with a retro shopping arcade near the station, seaside promenades, and the Atami Plum Garden, which hosts one of the region's earliest plum blossom festivals from late January into early March. A typical day trip starts with the Shinkansen arrival at Atami Station, followed by a walk down Heiwa-dori shopping street for fried fish cakes and local citrus sweets, then either a stroll along Atami Sun Beach and the harbor promenade or a visit to the MOA Museum of Art on the hillside above town, which holds a notable collection of Japanese and Asian art alongside gardens with sea views. Many visitors also use a public foot bath or a short onsen day-use session at one of the hotels along the harbor before returning to Atami Station in the late afternoon. The Atami Plum Garden festival period draws crowds and is worth an early start; outside that window the town is markedly quieter and can be visited comfortably later in the day. Because much of the town is built on a steep hillside, comfortable walking shoes make the slopes between the station, museum, and harbor easier to manage.
