Nihondaira Zoo

Nihondaira Zoo sits on the Nihondaira plateau above Shizuoka City and is known within Japan for its long-running success breeding red pandas, with viewing enclosures that let visitors watch them at close range. The zoo's compact grounds also house Amur tigers, snow leopards, and a variety of primates, laid out across terraced hillside paths that take advantage of the plateau's elevation for occasional glimpses toward Suruga Bay between enclosures. Feeding demonstrations and keeper talks run at scheduled times through the day, posted at the entrance, and give closer access to animal behavior than passive viewing alone. A full walk through the grounds, including time at the red panda and big cat enclosures, takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Weekday mornings are the best time to see the red pandas active and feeding before the midday heat, particularly in cooler months, since the animals tend to rest in shade once temperatures climb. The zoo pairs naturally with a same-day visit to the Nihondaira Ropeway and Kunozan Toshogu Shrine nearby on the same plateau.
