Izumo Soba Kigaru

Izumo Soba Kigaru is a casual noodle restaurant near Matsue Castle in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, specializing in handmade Izumo soba, the dark, glossy buckwheat noodles milled with the husk left in that are one of the signature foods of the San'in region. The kitchen prepares noodles fresh for warigo soba, served stacked in three lacquered bowls with grated daikon, green onion, bonito flakes, and nori, as well as cold zaru soba and a tempura zaru soba topped with shrimp and vegetable fritters. The dining room is simple and functional, aimed at travelers moving between the castle and the nearby Shiomi Nawate samurai district rather than at a lingering, formal meal, with counter and table seating and quick turnover at lunchtime. There is no dedicated beverage program beyond bottled beer and soft drinks, keeping the focus on the noodles themselves. Reservations are not required and the restaurant is generally easy to walk into outside of the busiest midday hour, though it can fill with day-trippers visiting the castle. Prices are inexpensive, typically ¥800 to ¥1,600 for a full bowl, making it a practical, no-frills lunch stop. The restaurant is open daily from 11am to 7pm, giving more flexibility than many of Matsue's soba shops that close in the mid-afternoon, which makes it a useful option for travelers arriving later in the day near the castle.
