Kaka Kukedo Coastal Walk

The Kaka Kukedo Coastal Walk follows the shoreline of the Shimane Peninsula near Kaka, in Matsue City, above the sea caves that give the area its name. Access is by bus or car from central Matsue to Marine Plaza Shimane in Kaka, where the walking path begins beside the sightseeing boat pier; no permit is required. The route covers about 3 km round trip along paved and stepped coastal paths, with minimal elevation change limited to stairs and short bluff climbs, and takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours at a relaxed pace suitable for most visitors. The path alternates between paved promenade near Marine Plaza and narrower dirt-and-stone sections along the bluffs, offering partial shade from coastal pine trees but long open stretches exposed to sun and sea wind. Technically the walk is easy, with steps rather than scrambling, though some sections near the cliff edge lack barriers. Key landmarks include the Kaka Kukedo sea caves, reachable by sightseeing boat from the pier rather than on foot, and several coastal lookout points over the Sea of Japan. Marine Plaza Shimane, at the start of the walk, serves as a natural turn-around point for a shorter outing, while the full loop continues past additional bluff viewpoints before looping back. There are no water sources along the bluff sections, but Marine Plaza Shimane has restrooms, a restaurant, and vending machines at the start and end of the route. The coastal boat tours to the caves themselves run March through November, weather permitting, and are a separate paid activity from the walking path.
