Adachi Museum of Art (Yasugi)

The Adachi Museum of Art sits in Yasugi City, about 40 km east of Matsue City in eastern Shimane Prefecture, and is reachable in roughly 35–45 minutes combining rail and a shuttle bus. From Matsue Station, the JR San'in Main Line or the Limited Express Yakumo runs to Yasugi Station in 15–25 minutes (¥500–1,300 / $3.30–8.70), where the museum operates a free shuttle bus departing about twice an hour; the shuttle takes around 20 minutes and has a first-come, first-served 28-passenger limit, so arriving at the stop a few minutes early on weekends is worth it. Drivers can cover the same distance directly in about 40 minutes with parking available at the museum.

The museum is known internationally less for its collection — though it does hold significant works by Yokoyama Taikan and other modern Japanese painters — than for its meticulously maintained gardens, which have been ranked first in Japan by the Journal of Japanese Gardening for over two decades. A morning visit works well: the White Gravel and Pine Garden and the Dry Landscape Garden are best appreciated in clear daylight, and the museum's floor-to-ceiling windows frame the gardens like living paintings, a deliberate design choice worth slowing down for. Each of the four seasons is curated with different plantings and colors, so the visual effect changes considerably between a spring and autumn visit.

Lunch can be taken at the museum's own restaurant and café, which serve set meals and overlook the garden, or back in Yasugi's small town center near the station for a more local, budget option. The afternoon can be spent revisiting the garden viewpoints at different light angles, browsing the museum shop, or walking the short circuit through the Moss Garden and Kikaku Waterfall Garden. Because the museum itself is compact, most visitors comfortably finish in three to four hours, leaving time to catch an earlier or later train back to Matsue depending on how long the gardens hold their attention. Year-round visits are worthwhile since the gardens are curated deliberately for every season, from spring blossoms to winter snow.
