Omihachiman grew up as a castle town in the 1580s and later thrived as the base of the Omi merchants, whose trading houses spread across Japan. Its Hachiman-bori canal, built to link the town to Lake Biwa, still runs past white-walled warehouses and willow trees, and is popular for short boat rides in a low, roofed vessel. The old merchant quarter nearby preserves rows of lattice-fronted houses, several open as museums, making this a compact, walkable town rather than a single sight.
