Hitsujiyama Park Shibazakura Hill

Hitsujiyama Park's Shibazakura Hill in Chichibu, Saitama offers a sweeping foreground of moss phlox (shibazakura) in pink, magenta, and white blooms arranged in ten cultivar blocks across a 17,600 sq m slope, with the profile of Mount Buko rising as a backdrop to the northwest. The park sits on a low hill above the town, so the moss phlox carpet occupies the lower two-thirds of the frame while Mount Buko's ridge and sky fill the upper third — a natural foreground/background split that favors a wide-angle composition. Morning light between 8:00 and 10:00 AM is side-lit to front-lit depending on shooting angle, softening the texture of the flowers and keeping colours saturated before the midday sun flattens contrast and haze builds over the mountain. Clear, dry mornings in the second half of April produce the richest colour separation between the ten shibazakura varieties; overcast days mute the pink-to-white gradient but eliminate harsh shadow lines between mounded plant clusters. The festival period (roughly April 10 to May 6, dates shift with bloom) draws heavy weekend crowds, with the main viewing platform and lower paths becoming difficult to shoot without people in frame after 10:00 AM; arriving at the 8:00 AM opening secures clearer sightlines and easier tripod positioning along the perimeter path. Tripods are permitted on the paved viewing paths but not on the planted slopes themselves — visitors must stay on designated walkways at all times, and stepping onto the moss phlox beds is prohibited and enforced by staff during the festival. No drone use is permitted over the park during the festival period. Entry to the shibazakura festival area requires a paid admission ticket (roughly 300 yen for adults during peak bloom), separate from general park access. The rest of Hitsujiyama Park, including the summit observation deck used for wider valley views, is free and open outside the ticketed shibazakura zone.
