This self-guided crawl uses a map available from the Kumagaya City Tourism Association (+81-48-524-1222) and covers the cluster of dumpling restaurants around JR Kumagaya Station's north exit that make up the city's 'Gyoza no Machi' (Dumpling Town) identity, a branding effort the city has promoted for over a decade to celebrate its concentration of gyoza specialists. The route visits two to three participating shops, sampling yaki gyoza — pan-fried dumplings with a crisp bottom — at each stop, allowing comparison of the different fillings and wrapper styles favored by competing restaurants in the cluster. At least one stop on the route also serves sui gyoza, dumplings boiled and served in a light broth rather than pan-fried, offering a lighter counterpoint to the fried versions. The walking map covers only the station-front shop cluster, keeping the whole crawl within easy walking distance and roughly two hours including sit-down time at each stop.
