Chichibu & Hitsujiyama Park

Chichibu sits about 80km west of central Tokyo and 75km west of Omiya, reached in roughly 80 minutes from Ikebukuro on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line Limited Express (Laview) to Seibu-Chichibu Station. The area centers on Hitsujiyama Park, a 20-minute walk from the station, where a hillside planted with roughly 400,000 shibazakura (moss phlox) plants blooms in shades of pink, purple, and white against a backdrop of Mount Buko. A typical day begins with the morning train from Tokyo, arriving by mid-morning to walk the shibazakura terraces before the afternoon crowds build, followed by a stroll through central Chichibu's old townscape, including the Chichibu Shrine grounds. Lunch options include soba restaurants near the station and stalls selling Chichibu's regional specialty, misogyu (beef simmered in miso), along with fresh produce from local farm stands. The afternoon can extend to Mitsumine Shrine's approach roads or a visit to a local sake brewery, several of which offer tastings, before returning to the station by early evening. Walking the park's terraced paths and connecting streets amounts to a moderate few hours on foot, more substantial than a simple train-and-walk outing but well short of a hike. Chichibu's signature season is late April through early May, when the shibazakura is in full bloom and the park draws large weekend crowds, making a weekday or early-morning visit preferable; December brings the Chichibu Night Festival (Chichibu Yomatsuri), one of Japan's designated float festivals, with illuminated floats and fireworks drawing visitors after dark. Outside these peak windows, Chichibu remains a pleasant lower-key trip focused on its old town streets, shrine, and mountain scenery. Rest stops are plentiful near Seibu-Chichibu Station, with cafes and convenience stores clustered around the station plaza for a final coffee or snack before the return journey to Tokyo.
