Toki no Kane (Bell of Time)

Toki no Kane, the Bell of Time, is a wooden bell tower standing roughly 16 meters tall in the heart of Kawagoe's Kurazukuri district. The current structure dates to 1893, the fourth rebuild since the original tower was erected in the early Edo period under the Kawagoe domain's lord, and it has rung four times daily ever since to mark the hours for the merchant town below. Visitors typically stop for 15 to 30 minutes, enough time to view the tower from the small square at its base, walk around it once, and wait for a chime if the timing lines up with 6:00AM, noon, 3:00PM, or 6:00PM. The tower's dark wood frame and layered roof make it one of the most photographed structures in Saitama, especially from the narrow lane approaching it from Kurazukuri Street, which frames the tower between rows of kura warehouse buildings. Photographers favor the golden-hour light around the 6:00PM ring, when the wooden structure catches warm evening sun against a darkening sky. Crowds build through the late morning and early afternoon as day-trippers move along Kurazukuri Street, so early risers who arrive before 9:00AM get a much quieter view of the tower and its surrounding lane.
