Genkai Coastline Rock Formations at Nanatsugama

Nanatsugama, the seven interconnected sea caves carved into the basalt cliffs of the Genkai coastline near Yobuko in Karatsu, Saga, offers two distinct frames: from a sightseeing boat, the composition looks up and into the dark cave mouths with sunlit water reflecting off the basalt columns, and from the clifftop trail above, wider shots capture the columnar rock formations dropping into the sea, best silhouetted at sunset. The boat cruise runs into caves oriented to catch varying light depending on the route, so mid-morning between 9:30 and 11:00 gives the most even sunlit interiors, when the sun is high enough to reach into the cave mouths without harsh glare on the water; the clifftop trail instead favors sunset, when low light rakes across the columnar basalt and silhouettes the rock formations against the sea. April through June and September through November bring the calmest seas and clearest water, both for boat photography and for reducing spray inside the caves; summer typhoon season and winter swells can cancel boat departures. The boat tours run on a schedule with limited seating, so photographers wanting an unobstructed cave shot should book an early departure before the boats fill; the clifftop trail is less crowded and rarely requires waiting for a vantage point. Tripods are impractical on the moving boat but usable on the clifftop trail; drone use is not appropriate given the coastal cliffs and boat traffic; the boat cruise carries a ticket fee, while the clifftop trail is free to walk.
