Takeo Onsen & Mifuneyama Rakuen Garden

Takeo City lies 28 km southwest of Saga City and is reached in about 20 minutes on the JR Kamome limited express to Takeo-Onsen Station, one of the fastest and easiest day trips from the prefectural capital. The town pairs two attractions within walking or short-taxi distance of each other: the historic Takeo Onsen bathing complex and the Mifuneyama Rakuen landscape garden. A morning visit typically begins at Takeo Onsen Roman-za, a red-lacquered public bathhouse building dating to 1876, a 10-minute walk from the station, followed by a look at the elaborate Romon gate that marks the onsen district's entrance. From there, Mifuneyama Rakuen is a 5-minute taxi ride or 30-minute walk, a 500,000-square-meter Edo-period garden built around a dramatic rock face resembling a ship's bow, with ponds, teahouses, and forest trails. Late April to May brings the garden's azalea displays into full bloom across the hillside, while November transforms the same paths into a nighttime illumination event featuring digital art projections among the maples. A full day allows a soak at one of the onsen ryokan after walking the garden's trails, and the town's shopping street near the station has restaurants serving Saga beef and local sake between the two main sites. Because Takeo-Onsen Station is also a stop on the Nishikyushu Shinkansen, the trip pairs easily with a Nagasaki extension for travellers continuing further west.
