Saga Balloon Challenge Tethered Balloon Ride

The Saga Balloon Challenge tethered ride is a short hot-air balloon ascent held on select Sunday mornings at the Kase Riverside balloon field in Saga City, part of the build-up events for the Saga International Balloon Fiesta. Riders climb into the balloon basket while it stays tethered to the ground and rises roughly 30–50 m before being winched back down, giving a brief aerial view over the Kase River flats without the fitness demands or duration of a free flight. No special fitness is needed beyond standing in the basket for the few minutes of the ascent, though very young children may need to be held and operators can turn away riders below a minimum height for basket safety on the day. The Saga International Balloon Fiesta organization runs the rides using its own competition balloons and trained ground crew, the same teams that operate the fiesta's internationally sanctioned November event, and crew give a short safety briefing on holding the basket rail and exit procedure before each ascent. Rides are entirely weather-dependent and first-come, first-served, with no reservations; wind above a set threshold grounds the balloons for safety, so a scheduled Sunday can be cancelled with little notice. The season runs late November through mid-February on select Sunday mornings only, timed to the calm, cool air of winter dawn, which gives balloons the stable lift conditions they need; midday and windier afternoon conditions are avoided entirely, and the whole program pauses outside its short winter window.
