Nara National Museum

Nara National Museum, opened in 1895 in Nara Park, specializes in Buddhist art and archaeology, with a permanent collection spanning statues, sutras, and ritual objects from across Japan's early Buddhist history, displayed across its original Meiji-era building and a connected modern wing. The museum's underground galleries link the historic and contemporary buildings and house rotating special exhibitions alongside the permanent Buddhist sculpture collection, which includes gilt-bronze and wood statues spanning over a millennium. The museum's signature annual event is the Shoso-in Exhibition, held from late October to mid-November, when a rotating selection of 8th-century imperial treasures normally sealed in the Shoso-in repository at Todai-ji are displayed publicly for a few weeks only, drawing visitors from across Japan. A standard visit takes 1.5 to 2 hours, longer during the Shoso-in Exhibition when galleries are more crowded and queues can form at the entrance. The museum extends hours to 8PM on Fridays and Saturdays, giving a quieter evening option for visitors who prefer to avoid the daytime tour-bus traffic in Nara Park.
