Gora Park

Gora Park is a French-style landscape garden in the Gora area of Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, established in 1914 and situated at the upper terminus of the Hakone Tozan Cable Car. The park's design blends European formal garden principles — symmetrical rose beds, fountain features, clipped hedges, and a central formal axis — with the surrounding Japanese mountain environment. At 540 metres above sea level, the elevated setting moderates summer temperatures and makes the park a comfortable retreat during Hakone's warmer months.

The park's centrepiece is its rose garden, which extends across the central terraced beds and blooms in two main seasons: late April to early June (spring roses) and late September to early November (autumn roses). During peak bloom, the roses draw serious horticultural visitors from across the Kanto region. Beyond the formal garden, a tropical greenhouse houses orchids, bromeliads, and other equatorial plants in a glass pavilion — an unusual contrast to the mountain surroundings. A second greenhouse features a café and retail section with locally produced goods.

A Craft House workshop facility within the park offers visitors the chance to engage in traditional Japanese crafts — glass blowing, pottery, wood-burning, and candle making — in timed sessions that must be booked on arrival or reserved in advance. These workshops add a participatory dimension unusual for botanical gardens and make the park a worthwhile stop for visitors with children or an interest in artisan processes. A tea ceremony experience is also available, conducted in a small tatami room within the grounds.

Gora Park sits adjacent to the Hakone Open Air Museum, separated by a short walk; combining both sites fills a comfortable morning or afternoon. The park's formal layout means the visitor experience is largely self-directing — central axis, greenhouse, Craft House, and return via the rose beds — requiring about 1 hour for a standard visit.
