Sakurajima Youth Hostel

Sakurajima Youth Hostel occupies a position on Sakurajima Island, the active volcanic island rising from the centre of Kinko Bay directly opposite Kagoshima City. Staying on the island rather than visiting as a day trip gives guests an unmediated experience of life in the shadow of one of Japan's most consistently active volcanoes, where periodic ashfall and distant rumblings are a routine backdrop. The hostel provides dormitory beds and private double room accommodation at entry-level prices, with a shared kitchen enabling self-catering for guests on extended stays. Bicycle rental is available on the premises, and cycling is the preferred way to explore the island's coastal route, passing the Sakurajima Visitor Centre, lava fields frozen since the 1914 eruption, the Yunohira Observatory, and the small farms cultivating Sakurajima daikon — one of the world's largest radishes — and Sakurajima mikan tangerines, both agricultural products unique to the island. Free Wi-Fi is provided, and coin laundry is available for guests staying multiple nights. The Sakurajima Ferry from Kagoshima City docks approximately 3 km from the hostel, running roughly every 15 minutes with a crossing time of 15 minutes. The Sakurajima Ferry Terminal pier has a free footbath (ashiyu) fed by volcanic hot spring water that visitors often use before or after island exploration.
