Chiran is a former castle town whose preserved samurai residence street, lined with clipped hedges and stone walls, gives a sense of Satsuma-domain-era rank and garden design that's rare to see intact. The same town was also the departure point for many kamikaze pilots in the final months of WWII, and the Chiran Peace Museum built around that history is one of the more detailed and sobering war museums in Japan, displaying pilots' letters home alongside aircraft and personal effects. Pairing the two — the formal Edo-period gardens and the WWII museum — makes for a day trip with real emotional range rather than a single-note stop.
