Kotohira Kadan Ryokan

Kotohira Kadan is a luxury ryokan in Kotohira town, positioned on the hillside beside the pilgrimage route to Kotohira-gu (Konpira-san) shrine. The property commands elevated views over the surrounding Sanuki plain and operates at the highest tier of Japanese traditional hospitality, with meticulous personal service, private open-air hot spring suites, and elaborate seasonal kaiseki cuisine that establish it as one of Shikoku's most celebrated overnight destinations.

The ryokan occupies a traditional wooden building expanded across several generations, with interior corridors lined in aged cypress, hanging scroll art changed seasonally, and flower arrangements refreshed daily. A strolling garden descends through stone-lantern paths toward a lower terrace with views across Kotohira-machi.

All rooms are genuine tatami chambers with hand-laid futon bedding, low lacquered tables, and private anteroom spaces. The private open-air hot spring suites (rotenburo) are the defining feature of the property—each suite has its own dedicated stone bath on a private veranda fed directly by natural hot spring water, allowing guests to soak without time restrictions or shared bathing protocols. Superior garden-view rooms open onto small private verandas above the strolling garden.

Dinner is the centrepiece of each stay: the kaiseki menu changes according to season and sources the finest available Seto Inland Sea seafood—wild sea bream, conger eel, and seasonal shellfish—alongside Sanuki mountain vegetables and Kagawa agricultural produce. Presentation follows formal kaiseki conventions with lacquerware vessels and hand-painted ceramics.

Optional experiences include tea ceremony instruction in the garden pavilion and kimono rental with styling assistance. Staff-guest ratios are high, and all requests are managed with the level of attentiveness expected at the premium tier of Japanese ryokan.
