Sannomiya Morning Market Stalls (Sannomiya Hondori)

The Sannomiya Hondori shopping arcade in Chuo-ku is Kobe's busiest pedestrianised market corridor, stretching through the heart of the city's main commercial district near Sannomiya station. The morning street food scene within the arcade — concentrated in the first block of Sannomiya-cho 1-chome — operates primarily from 6:00 AM to noon, making it one of Kobe's few destinations for early-morning eating before major restaurants and cafes open. A handful of stalls continue until 2:00 PM on weekdays and into the afternoon on weekends. Taiyaki — fish-shaped cakes filled with sweet red bean paste, cooked in cast-iron moulds until the exterior is crisp — are among the most iconic items and cost around 200 yen each. Nikuman (steamed pork buns) at 250 yen are particularly popular in cooler months, the filling rich with ginger-seasoned pork and steamed to order. Takoyaki — molten-centred octopus balls in a wheat batter, served in sets of eight pieces and topped with bonito flakes and okonomiyaki sauce — represent the area's Osaka-influenced street food tradition, and stalls serving them do brisk business from late morning onward. The arcade itself is covered, making it weather-proof and practical for year-round use. Stalls are cash-only and prices throughout are among the lowest in the city. The clientele is predominantly local — students, office workers, and residents picking up breakfast — giving the morning market a genuinely everyday quality uncommon in more tourist-oriented areas of Kobe. The Hondori arcade connects several major shopping streets and leads through to Motomachi, making it a practical walking passage as well as a food destination in Hyogo Prefecture.
