Odaiba

Odaiba is a large artificial island in Tokyo Bay in Minato Ward, originally constructed in the late 19th century as a defensive fortification and subsequently developed from the 1990s onward as a futuristic urban entertainment and commercial district. The island is connected to central Tokyo primarily via the Yurikamome automated monorail line (departing from Shimbashi Station), which crosses Rainbow Bridge and provides panoramic bay and city views during transit. The island's skyline features the distinctive Fuji Television Building with its spherical observation lounge, the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza mall anchored by a life-size 18-meter Gundam RX-78-2 statue outside, and the teamLab Planets immersive digital art facility in the Toyosu area adjacent to the island. Palette Town (the original entertainment complex) was redeveloped from 2024 onward. The waterfront promenade facing central Tokyo offers unobstructed views of Rainbow Bridge and the distant Tokyo skyline, including Tokyo Tower and Skytree in the same frame — a popular photography location particularly at sunset and after dark. The beach area (Odaiba Kaihin Park) provides a stretch of managed sand directly in Tokyo Bay where swimmers are occasionally permitted seasonally. The island is also home to the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan), which presents interactive exhibitions on robotics, space science, and AI, including demonstrations by ASIMO and the Otonaroid humanoid robot. The island has limited off-hours appeal; it functions primarily as a daytime and early evening destination.
