Comoe National Park

Comoe National Park spans the border of the Zanzan and Savanes regions in northeastern Cote d'Ivoire, near the villages of Kakpin and Kafolo, and is one of the largest protected areas in West Africa at roughly 11,500 square kilometres. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park protects savanna, gallery forest along the Comoe River, and forest islands that together support elephants, buffalo, hippos, roan and kob antelope, and more than 500 recorded bird species. Because of the park's scale, visits are organized around guided game drives, typically departing around 6:30am and again at 3:30pm to take advantage of cooler temperatures when wildlife is most active near waterholes and the riverbanks. Most visitors base themselves at a lodge or campsite near the park boundary and plan one to two days, allowing for both a dawn and a dusk drive plus time to explore the gallery forest sections on foot with an armed ranger. The riverside forest strips along the Comoe offer the best chance of hippo and elephant sightings, especially where the river narrows near Kakpin, while the open savanna to the south is better for antelope herds and raptors. The dry season from December to February is the strongest window, when thinner vegetation and concentrated waterholes make wildlife easier to spot; the rainy season floods many tracks and can make parts of the park inaccessible. Visitor numbers remain low compared to East African parks, so even peak-season game drives rarely feel crowded, though road conditions from Abidjan or Bouake can be a bigger practical constraint than crowding.
