Getting Around Abidjan Autonomous District 2026

Abidjan is the economic capital of Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire) and West Africa's business and cultural powerhouse, its skyscraper-lined Plateau district rising directly over the Ebrie Lagoon. Known as the 'Manhattan of West Africa,' the city mixes modernist landmarks, sprawling markets, and a nightlife scene that gave birth to coupe-decale, all spread across lagoon-divided communes connected by bridges, ferries, and bustling gbaka minibuses. Cocody's leafy boulevards, Treichville's market energy, and Yopougon's nightlife strips each give Abidjan a different face, while Grand-Bassam and Assinie's beaches sit within easy day-trip reach.

Public

SOTRA buses and lagoon bateau-bus ferries are cheap and the ferries in particular are a practical way to cross the Ébrié Lagoon while avoiding bridge traffic. Gbaka minibuses and woro-woro shared taxis reach nearly everywhere but are crowded and can be confusing for first-time visitors without route knowledge.

Taxi

Woro-woro (shared, fixed-route) taxis are the cheapest way to move around a single commune. Taxi compteur (metered private taxis) and ride-hail apps such as Yango and Uber are more comfortable and predictable for cross-town or airport trips; always confirm the meter or agree the fare in advance with street taxis.

Rental

Self-driving is workable for day trips to Grand-Bassam or Yamoussoukro on well-maintained highways, but Abidjan's own traffic and informal parking arrangements make renting less appealing for getting around the city center itself. A 4WD is worth considering for the rougher coastal track toward Assouindé and Assinie.

Walking

Plateau's business district and parts of Cocody are partially walkable, but heat, humidity, heavy traffic and a lack of continuous pavements make walking impractical for longer distances or between communes separated by the lagoon.
