Parc National du Banco Short Nature Loop

The Short Nature Loop is the entry-level walking circuit at Parc National du Banco, a protected rainforest reserve wedged between the Plateau and Attécoubé districts of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The trailhead sits just off the Autoroute du Nord at the park's main gate in Attécoubé, reachable by taxi or ride-hailing app in roughly 15-20 minutes from Plateau or Cocody; there is a small entry fee payable at the gate, and a park guide accompanies visitors on this short circuit as a standard condition of entry. The loop covers 2-3km on flat, well-trodden dirt paths with essentially no elevation gain, making it accessible to casual walkers and families rather than dedicated hikers. The surface is packed earth and occasional wooden boardwalk over damp patches, shaded almost continuously by dense rainforest canopy, so sun exposure is minimal but humidity is high year-round. Along the route, the guide typically points out the park's laundry-washing stream where Abidjanais have long come to wash clothes, stands of raffia palm and giant hardwood trees, and, with some luck, colobus monkeys or hornbills in the canopy. There is no formal water source or shelter hut along the loop itself, so visitors carry their own water; the park's entrance area has basic facilities including restrooms and a small kiosk. The loop does not have a meaningful turn-around point since it forms a closed circuit back to the entrance, and the flat terrain means the walk can be shortened by backtracking at almost any point if needed. Because Parc National du Banco is one of the last remaining primary rainforest patches within a major West African capital, the short loop offers a rare chance to experience dense tropical forest without leaving the city, and it is often the first stop for visitors before considering the longer half-day circuit deeper into the reserve.
