A walled medieval town crowned by Soave Castle, in the heart of Soave white-wine vineyards.

Soave is a walled medieval town in the Veneto, about 23 km east of Verona, surrounded by the vineyards that produce Soave white wine. It can be reached in around 30-40 minutes by ATV bus (the line should be verified before travel) or in about 25 minutes by car along the A4 corridor. The town is dominated by the Scaliger Castle, or Castello di Soave, on Via Castello, which stands on the hillside above the old centre and is joined to the town by a long stretch of crenellated walls with towers. The castle is open to visitors on certain days and has courtyards, rooms with period furnishings and ramparts with views over the vineyards. Inside the walls, the old centre is small and quiet, built around Via Roma and Piazza dell'Antenna, and includes the Palazzo di Giustizia, the Palazzo Cavalli and the parish church. Wine is the focus of the visit, with the Soave Classico zone on the hills around the town producing the Garganega-based wine, and many cellars and enoteche offer tastings. A good one-day plan starts with a morning walk through the old town and a visit to the castle, then a vineyard walk or drive along the hill roads. Lunch is served at trattorie inside the walls or at wine estates, with dishes such as risotto, bigoli pasta and local cured meats suited to white wine. The afternoon can be spent at a cellar tasting, which should be booked ahead, and with a return along the walls at golden hour. Soave is best between April and October. Late spring offers green vineyards and warm weather, while autumn adds harvest colour; the town hosts a wine festival in the early autumn that draws large crowds. In winter, the castle keeps shorter hours, and some restaurants close for part of the week. Soave can be paired with Lazise or Valpolicella in a longer wine itinerary.
