Alpago Lake and Forested Hills

The Alpago Lake and Forested Hills walk is a gentle, family-friendly circuit around the shores of Lago di Santa Croce, the large lake at the heart of the Alpago basin in Belluno Province, in the quieter southeastern corner of the Veneto Dolomites. The route runs about 8km with only 150m of cumulative ascent over two to three hours, following lakeside paths and easy forest tracks through beech and chestnut woods that climb the lower slopes of the surrounding foothills. On calm days the water mirrors the Dolomite ridges above, and the trail passes a string of small Alpago villages whose traditional stone-and-timber architecture reflects the area's rural heritage. Surfaces are mostly flat compacted dirt, grass and short paved village stretches, with woodland shade for much of the way and almost no exposure, making this one of the most relaxed outings in the region. Lago di Santa Croce is a popular spot for windsurfing and sailing thanks to the reliable afternoon thermal wind, and the walk passes beaches and grassy shores ideal for picnics and summer swimming. Landmarks include the lakeside promenade near Farra d'Alpago, viewpoints toward the Cansiglio forest plateau and the Monte Cavallo group, and small harbours dotted with sailing craft. Cafés, agriturismi and lakeside bars in the villages provide water, food and shelter, so little needs to be carried, and the gentle grade and frequent road access make it easy to shorten or lengthen the loop. The Alpago is also known for its lamb and local cheeses, sold at farm shops along the way. Spring and autumn bring quiet trails and forest colour, while summer adds swimming and watersports, making this an accessible year-round walk in mild conditions.
