Padua — Giotto's Masterpiece

Padua lies just 40km west of Venice in central Veneto and is one of the best-value day trips from the lagoon, only about 25 minutes away by frequent Trenitalia trains from Venice Santa Lucia. The historic center is flat and compact, walkable from the station, so the city is comfortably seen on foot in a single day. The unmissable highlight, best booked weeks ahead, is the Scrovegni Chapel, whose interior is entirely covered by Giotto's revolutionary early-fourteenth-century fresco cycle of the lives of the Virgin and Christ, a cornerstone of Western art; visits are timed and last around fifteen minutes inside a climate-controlled vestibule. The chapel is one of several sites that together earned Padua's fourteenth-century fresco cycles UNESCO World Heritage status in 2021. A morning around the Scrovegni and the adjoining Eremitani museum pairs well with an afternoon at the vast Prato della Valle, one of Europe's largest squares, ringed by a moat and statues, and the great Basilica di Sant'Antonio, a major pilgrimage church holding the tomb of Saint Anthony beneath Byzantine-style domes. Nearby, the Orto Botanico, founded in 1545 as the world's oldest surviving university botanical garden, is itself a separate UNESCO site. Padua is a lively university town, home to one of Europe's oldest universities, and its arcaded streets, daily markets under the Palazzo della Ragione, and student energy make a refreshing contrast to tourist Venice. For a break, the neoclassical Caffè Pedrocchi has poured coffee since 1831 and its mint-and-coffee specialty is a local institution; the surrounding squares offer Spritz, cured meats, and Veneto wines. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the city, and any time of year a pre-booked chapel slot is essential, as same-day tickets are rarely available. With such a quick rail link, Padua works as a focused half day for the chapel or a full day taking in all three UNESCO attractions.
