Piazza delle Erbe is the lively, elongated market square at the heart of Verona, occupying the site of the ancient Roman forum that was the city's political and commercial centre two thousand years ago. Today it is ringed by some of Verona's most striking buildings: the frescoed Case Mazzanti, the Baroque Palazzo Maffei crowned with statues of Greek gods, the medieval Torre del Gardello, and the tall Torre dei Lamberti soaring above the rooftops. At the square's centre stand the 14th-century Madonna Verona fountain, incorporating a Roman statue, and a column bearing the winged Lion of St. Mark, a reminder of Verona's centuries under Venetian rule. Market stalls under white canopies sell souvenirs, fruit, and local produce through the morning, while cafés and bars spread their tables across the flagstones for the evening aperitivo, when the square is at its most atmospheric. A visit takes 30 to 60 minutes to soak up the architecture and people-watch, though many linger longer over a spritz. The best photo angles capture the painted facades from the southern end and the Torre dei Lamberti rising behind the fountain; visitors can ride a lift partway and climb the tower for a panoramic view over the square and city for a small fee. Crowds peak at midday and during the evening passeggiata, while early morning offers the calmest light and emptiest stalls. The square sits a short stroll from the adjoining, quieter Piazza dei Signori, the Arena di Verona, and Juliet's House, anchoring any walk through the historic centre of Verona in Italy's Veneto region. Entry to the square is free and it is always open, making it a natural meeting point and starting place for exploring the city.
