Santuario di Oropa

The Santuario di Oropa is the largest Marian sanctuary in the Alps and one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Piedmont, set in a mountain amphitheatre at around 1,200 metres above the town of Biella. Its origins are traced by tradition to Saint Eusebius of Vercelli in the fourth century, and over the centuries it grew into a vast monumental complex of courtyards, porticoes and lodgings arranged on a grand scale to receive pilgrims. The devotional heart is the Black Madonna, a dark wooden statue of the Virgin and Child venerated for centuries and housed in the older Ancient Basilica, while behind it rises the enormous domed New Basilica, completed in the twentieth century, whose great cupola dominates the valley. The sanctuary is part of the UNESCO-listed network of the Sacri Monti, and its Sacro Monte of chapels, a museum, royal apartments where the Savoy stayed, and a botanical garden of Alpine flora all add to a visit. The setting itself is a highlight, ringed by green mountains and offering cool, clear air and walking trails, with a cable car and high-altitude lake nearby. A visit usually takes two to three hours, more for those who walk the trails or climb to the Sacro Monte. The basilicas are free to enter, with small fees for the museum and apartments. Oropa is busiest on summer weekends and major feast days, especially the great processions held every century; weekdays and the shoulder seasons are calmer. Summer and early autumn are the most pleasant for the mountain setting. Reached by car in about twenty minutes from Biella or by seasonal bus, the sanctuary is a serene and monumental highlight of the Piedmont Alps.
