Perched at over 950 metres beneath jagged peaks, the sanctuary of Pietrabbondante centres on a beautifully preserved Hellenistic theatre with anatomically carved stone seats, fronted by the podia of two temples. It was the religious and political heart of the Pentri Samnites. The setting, against a backdrop of mountains, is among the most evocative archaeological sites in southern Italy.
