Capracotta's Prato Gentile centre, set on a high beech-fringed plateau above 1,400 m, is one of the best Nordic skiing venues in central-southern Italy and has hosted national cross-country championships. The signed 'Mario Di Nucci' loops thread silver-fir and beech woods, with terrain for first-timers through to fit racers, and reliable snow through the heart of winter.
