Lago di Fiastra Turquoise Lake

The Lago di Fiastra is a turquoise reservoir in the province of Macerata, set against the slopes of the Monti Sibillini in southern Marche, created in 1955 when a dam was built across the river Fiastrone. Its remarkable glacial-blue and turquoise colour comes from fine limestone minerals suspended in the water, which scatter light to give the lake an almost alpine intensity that contrasts vividly with the green hills and the high peaks of the Sibillini beyond. The photographic appeal lies in that colour and the mountain setting, and counter to the usual golden-hour rule, the turquoise reads at its most saturated in the brighter, more overhead light of late morning to early afternoon on a sunny day, when sunlight penetrates the water and the mineral colour glows; for a moodier landscape, the golden hour throws warm light across the Sibillini backdrop, and calm, windless conditions turn the surface to a mirror for reflections of the mountains. Beaches and shoreline points around the lake give varied vantages, and the dam itself is the start of the popular trail to the red pinnacles of the Lame Rosse, so the lake and the canyon are naturally combined in one excursion. Spring and early summer bring fuller water and fresh green, while late summer can lower the level. The lake lies within the Monti Sibillini National Park, so drone use is restricted and current rules should be checked. There are no fees for the shoreline, and the area is popular for swimming and picnics in summer. With its vivid water framed by mountains, the Lago di Fiastra is one of the most distinctive natural subjects in the region.
