Gola della Rossa and Valle Scappuccia

The Gola della Rossa is the dramatic centrepiece of the Parco Naturale Regionale della Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi, at over 10,000 hectares the largest protected area in the Marche, lying in the Ancona province around Genga and Serra San Quirico. Here the Esino river has cut a deep limestone gorge through the pre-Apennine ridge, its red-tinged rock walls giving the gorge its name, and the surrounding park holds a network of some 35 marked trails covering more than 170 kilometres through one of the richest natural environments in the region, with over 1,250 plant species and abundant birdlife. A rewarding moderate circuit of around eight kilometres with roughly 400 metres of gain, taking three to four hours, combines the gorge with the Valle Scappuccia, a small side valley protected as a botanical nature reserve, where a cool, shaded watercourse and dense vegetation shelter rare plants in a hidden, almost untouched setting. From trailheads near Serra San Quirico or Genga, paths climb through holm-oak and hornbeam woodland onto open slopes with views into the gorge, where the high cliffs are a stronghold for nesting golden eagles, peregrine falcons, and other raptors that are regularly seen soaring on the thermals. Trail surfaces alternate between shaded forest dirt, rockier sections, and open hillside, with some sustained climbing but no scrambling, and the gorge environment stays cooler than the open Apennine ridges in summer. The same park contains the world-famous Frasassi Caves and the romantic clifftop Tempio del Valadier, a neoclassical chapel built into a cave mouth, so a walking day here pairs naturally with these cultural highlights. There are no reliable fountains on the higher trails, so hikers should carry water, and waymarking follows CAI and park signage; a map or GPS track is helpful given the density of the trail network. Spring brings flowering plants and the most active birdlife, autumn cool clear walking and forest colour. With its combination of a wild river gorge, a protected botanical valley, soaring raptors, and the cave and chapel attractions nearby, the Gola della Rossa offers one of the most varied and scenic walking areas in the Marche.
