Castelluccio Fioritura and the Sibillini (from Ascoli Piceno)

The fioritura of Castelluccio, the summer flowering of the high Pian Grande plateau, is one of the most spectacular natural sights in Italy and a feasible, if effortful, day trip into the mountains from the southern Marche city of Ascoli Piceno. The plateau lies about fifty-five kilometres inland at around 1,300 metres within the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini, on the Marche-Umbria border, reached in about an hour and a half by car on winding mountain roads via Arquata del Tronto and the Forca di Presta pass; there is no practical direct public transport, so a car is needed. From roughly mid-June to mid-July, with the peak for 2026 expected around 15 June to 10 July, the cultivated fields of the prized Castelluccio lentil and the surrounding grassland erupt into a shifting mosaic of red poppies, blue cornflowers, yellow rape, and white and purple wild flowers, set against the bare mountains and overlooked by the small hilltop village of Castelluccio di Norcia. A day trip combines the drive, which is itself spectacular as the road crests the pass and the patchwork plain opens below, with easy walks across the level plain among the colours, the chance to climb a little onto the surrounding slopes for an aerial view of the blooming fields, and a stop in the village for the famous local lentils. During the peak fioritura weekends, access is regulated with shuttle buses and one-way traffic systems to manage the crowds, so an early arrival is essential; the plain is high, open, and exposed, with little shade and changeable weather, so sun protection, water, and a wind layer are needed even in summer, and afternoon thunderstorms can build quickly. Castelluccio village, badly damaged in the 2016 earthquakes, is slowly recovering and offers basic refreshments. Beyond the bloom, the same trip reaches the heart of the Sibillini, with the great peak of Monte Vettore rising above the plain, making it equally rewarding for mountain scenery in any season. Combining a once-a-year natural spectacle, dramatic mountain driving, and the wild high Apennines, the Castelluccio fioritura is the most memorable summer excursion from the southern Marche.
