Museo della Carta e della Filigrana, Fabriano

The Museo della Carta e della Filigrana in Fabriano, a town in the Apennine foothills of the Ancona province, tells the story of one of Italy's most influential crafts. From the 13th century Fabriano was the leading papermaking centre of medieval Europe, and it was here that crucial innovations were developed, including the use of metal-mesh moulds, gelatine sizing for durable writing paper, and, most famously, the watermark, or filigrana, a faint design pressed into the paper during forming that could identify a maker or mark a quality. The museum occupies the cloisters of a former Dominican convent and reconstructs a medieval paper mill, with working water-driven hammers (pile) for pulping rags and a hand-papermaking vat. Its great draw is the live demonstration, in which a master papermaker, the mastro cartaio, forms a sheet of paper by hand from pulp and reveals a watermark held up to the light, a process essentially unchanged for seven centuries. Further rooms display historic watermarks, papermaking tools, and the history of the craft into the industrial age; Fabriano remains a working centre of fine paper and banknote production today. Admission is €12 for adults, with an integrated ticket available covering several of Fabriano's cultural sites including the Pinacoteca Civica and the Oratorio della Carità, and free entry for children aged six and under. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Mondays. A visit takes around an hour to an hour and a half, ideally timed to coincide with a demonstration; it is well worth checking demonstration times in advance.
