Skiing and Snowboarding at Sarnano-Sassotetto

Sarnano-Sassotetto is the principal ski resort of the Marche, set high in the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini above the spa town of Sarnano in the Macerata province. The ski area links the localities of Sassotetto and Santa Maria Maddalena and is one of the most modern in the region, served by nine lifts giving access to around eleven kilometres of pistes that range in altitude between roughly 1,289 and 1,582 metres. The terrain is mostly suited to beginners and intermediate skiers and snowboarders, with gentle nursery slopes, broad blue and red runs, and two established ski schools offering group and private lessons in both disciplines; full rental of skis, boards, boots, and helmets is available at the base, so visitors need only bring warm waterproof layers, gloves, goggles, and sun protection. A particular charm of the resort is its position only about fifty kilometres from the coast, so on a clear day skiers can see the line of the Adriatic Sea from the slopes, a rare combination of mountain and sea. Lift passes are sold by the day or for multiple days. On-mountain safety follows standard Alpine practice, with patrolled and marked pistes and a rescue service, and Italian rules require children to wear helmets; off-piste away from the marked runs carries avalanche risk and should be approached only with proper knowledge and equipment. The season typically runs from December to March, snow conditions permitting, with the most reliable cover usually in January and February, while warm spells and the late-season thaw can thin the snow. Weekends and Italian school holidays are the busiest periods, so midweek visits mean shorter queues. The nearby resort of Frontignano di Ussita and the smaller Bolognola offer further Sibillini skiing in the same range. As the most developed winter-sports destination in the Marche, set within a national park with sea views, Sarnano-Sassotetto is the natural choice for an Apennine ski day in the region.
