Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is Italy's oldest active shopping arcade, completed in 1877 to a design by Giuseppe Mengoni and forming a glass-roofed cross between Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Scala in central Milan, Lombardy. Walking through, visitors pass beneath a soaring iron-and-glass barrel vault and a central octagonal dome, its structure as much a piece of Risorgimento-era engineering as decoration. The arms are lined with frescoed lunettes representing the continents, gilded stucco and the storefronts of luxury houses such as Prada — whose original 1913 shop survives here — alongside historic establishments like Caffè Camparino and the Savini restaurant. The most famous ritual is on the mosaic floor beneath the dome, where visitors spin on their heel on the bull emblem of Turin for good luck, a tradition that has worn a hollow into the tiles. A walk-through takes 30 to 60 minutes, longer with a coffee stop; in summer a guided rooftop walkway opens for views over the arcade and toward the Duomo. The Galleria is open around the clock and never closes, but it is at its most atmospheric and least crowded early in the morning before shops open and tour groups arrive; evenings bring a lively passeggiata. Photographers favour the view straight up into the dome and the symmetrical perspective down each arm, best captured when foot traffic is light. There is no admission charge, making it an easy stop between the Duomo and Teatro alla Scala. Crowds peak in late morning and afternoon, especially around the festive season when the arcade is decorated. Café seating beneath the glass is pricey but buys a front-row view of one of Milan's grandest public interiors.
