Terme dei Papi, on Via Strada Bagni in Viterbo, is the most renowned thermal spa in Lazio, drawing on sulphurous springs that have flowed here since Roman times and were favoured by medieval popes who gave the complex its name. The centrepiece is an enormous outdoor thermal pool, roughly 2,000 square metres, fed by the Bullicame spring at around 58°C and cooled to a comfortable 37-40°C for bathing, set against a backdrop of low Etruscan hills and medieval Viterbo. The mineral-rich, sulphurous water is prized for its benefits to skin, joints and respiration, and the natural mineral mud is used in wraps and rasul-style treatments. Beyond the great pool, the complex offers a wellness centre with a Roman-inspired Grotta delle Terme natural steam cave carved into the rock, mud therapy, inhalation treatments, hydromassage and a full menu of massages and beauty services. Therapists and thermal staff work within a medically supervised establishment, and the spa has long served both leisure bathers and visitors seeking curative thermal treatments recognised within the Italian thermal-cure tradition. Day access to the pool is the most popular option, while the adjoining hotel allows longer wellness stays. The pool typically opens for daytime bathing and also runs special evening and night-bathing sessions on selected days, when the steaming water under the stars is especially atmospheric. Reservation is recommended for treatments and night sessions, though daytime pool access is generally walk-in. As one of central Italy's most historic working thermal baths, Terme dei Papi combines the scale of a public bathing complex with the heritage of a centuries-old papal spa, making it a defining wellness destination in northern Lazio and an easy day trip from Rome, about 90 minutes away by road.
