The Viterbo Thursday Market is the weekly street market of Viterbo, the medieval walled capital of the Tuscia area in northern Lazio, held every Thursday morning around Piazza della Rocca and the adjoining streets near the Rocca Albornoz fortress. It is a large, sprawling general market of the kind found in towns across central Italy, and a thoroughly local affair rather than a tourist attraction: residents from Viterbo and the surrounding villages come to stock up, which gives it an authentic provincial atmosphere quite unlike Rome's city-centre markets. Stalls sell a broad sweep of everyday goods, with clothing, shoes, bags, fabrics and household linens making up the bulk, alongside seasonal local produce, cheeses and cured meats from the Tuscia countryside, kitchenware, plants and flowers, and the hazelnut products and ceramics for which the area is known. Quality and value lean practical and affordable rather than designer, with the produce and food stalls the standout for genuine local character; tourist trinkets are minimal here. Prices are generally fixed and clearly marked on the clothing and goods stalls, though modest bargaining can work when buying in quantity, and food is sold by weight at set prices. Cash in euros is the norm and many stalls do not accept cards, so small notes are advisable. The atmosphere is bustling and friendly through the morning, with cafes and bars around Piazza della Rocca and Viterbo's historic centre offering coffee, pastries and lunch nearby. The market spreads out from Piazza della Rocca along the surrounding streets in a loose arrangement, with the food and produce stalls a particular draw and the clothing and household stalls filling the wider area. Combined with a walk through Viterbo's exceptionally well-preserved medieval San Pellegrino quarter and the Palazzo dei Papi, the Thursday market makes for a rewarding day trip from Rome into rural Lazio.
