Subiaco Benedictine Monastery Trail

This short pilgrimage walk above the town of Subiaco in the Rome province of Lazio leads through the Valle dell'Aniene gorge to the Monastero di San Benedetto, also called the Sacro Speco, a remarkable 13th-century complex built directly into the cliff face above the river. The trail is roughly 6km return with about 200m of ascent over around 2 hours, making it an easy outing suitable for most walkers. Subiaco is reached by car on the Via Tiburtina-Valeria or by COTRAL bus from Rome's Ponte Mammolo metro; parking is available in the town and at the lower monastery of Santa Scolastica, a common starting point. From Santa Scolastica the path climbs through holm-oak and pine woodland on a shaded, mostly stony and packed-dirt track, following the gorge above the Aniene with glimpses of the river below. The clear highlight is the Sacro Speco itself, where St Benedict withdrew to a cave, the Sacro Speco grotto, around 500 AD; the monastery's interlocking chapels and staircases are covered in vivid medieval frescoes, including an early portrait of St Francis. The route is well shaded and never exposed, with the monastery serving as the natural turn-around point. There are no mountain refuges, but Santa Scolastica and the town provide water and refreshment, and the monasteries have their own visiting hours that walkers should check before setting out. The combination of a peaceful gorge, ancient woodland and one of the most spectacular cliff-built monasteries in Italy makes this a rewarding cultural walk rather than a strenuous hike, ideal for combining with a visit to historic Subiaco.
