Spiaggia Serapo, Gaeta

Spiaggia Serapo is the principal beach of Gaeta, a historic port town in the Latina province of Lazio, Italy, around 145km south of Rome on the Tyrrhenian coast. It is a long, gently curving horseshoe bay of fine pale sand backed by the town on one side and sheltered at its western end by the dramatic limestone bulk of Monte Orlando, with the cleft of the Montagna Spaccata visible nearby. The water is clear and shallow close to shore, turning from pale aquamarine to deep blue, and the bay's curved, partly sheltered shape keeps surf modest and swimming calm for much of the season. The vibe is lively and family-oriented: a long beachfront promenade lines the sand, busy with Italian families, couples and weekenders rather than a party crowd. The shore alternates between organised beach clubs renting umbrellas and sunbeds and free public stretches open to anyone with a towel. Amenities are good, with showers, seasonal lifeguards, bars and restaurants serving Gaeta's celebrated tiella savoury pies and fresh seafood. Paid and street parking sit behind the promenade, though both fill quickly in high summer. Gaeta is reached by car via the SS213 Flacca coast road; the nearest railway station is Formia-Gaeta around 10km away, linked to town by frequent local buses. Beyond the sand, the sheltered western end and the rock formations of Monte Orlando reward snorkellers, and boat trips run from Gaeta's port to the sea caves and the beaches of the Riviera di Ulisse. The medieval old town, the Sanctuary of the Santissima Trinita and the split-mountain chapel lie a short distance away, making Serapo an easy base for combining beach days with sightseeing.
