Sermoneta & Caetani Castle

Sermoneta is a perfectly preserved medieval hill town in the Latina province of southern Lazio, crowning a spur of the Lepini mountains and gazing out over the broad Pontine plain toward the sea. Largely untouched by modern development, its compact walled centre is a steep tangle of narrow cobbled lanes, stone archways, small churches and quiet squares that have changed little since the Middle Ages, making it a favourite location for period films. The town is crowned and defined by the Castello Caetani, a formidable 13th-century fortress built by the Caetani family, one of the most powerful dynasties of medieval Lazio, who also owned nearby Ninfa. The castle is among the best-preserved military complexes of its era in central Italy, with massive walls, a keep, drawbridge, frescoed halls, stables and a moat, and it can be visited on guided tours that climb to the ramparts for sweeping views across the plain. Beyond the castle, visitors enjoy wandering the medieval streets, visiting the Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta with its bell tower, and pausing at viewpoints over the countryside. Sermoneta sits only a few kilometres from the celebrated Garden of Ninfa, which the Caetani also created, so the two are very often combined into a single day out, the wild romantic garden below and the austere fortress town above. A visit to Sermoneta, including a castle tour and a stroll, takes around two hours; the town is free to explore and the castle charges a guided-tour fee. It is reached most easily by car from Rome or Latina, with parking near the town gate as the centre is pedestrian. Weekdays and mornings are the quietest.
