Dozza Painted Village (from Bologna)

Dozza is a small medieval hilltop village 35km southeast of Bologna in Emilia-Romagna, reached in about 40 minutes by bus (around €5 one way) or by car, with driving the easier option given the limited bus frequency. What sets Dozza apart is its open-air art gallery: since 1960 the biennial Muro Dipinto (Painted Wall) festival has invited artists to paint murals directly onto the houses, so the village's narrow lanes are lined with dozens of contemporary frescoes that turn an ordinary walk into a gallery stroll. At the top of the village stands the Rocca Sforzesca, a fifteenth-century fortress whose furnished rooms, kitchens, and dungeons are open to visitors, while its cellars house the Enoteca Regionale dell'Emilia-Romagna, the region's official wine showcase, where visitors can taste and buy from across Emilia-Romagna. A relaxed one-day arc is to arrive late morning, wander the mural-covered lanes and photograph the artworks, tour the Rocca and climb for valley views, then descend to the Enoteca for a tasting before a leisurely lunch. The whole village is compact and easily covered in a few hours, making it an easy half-day or a gentle full day combined with nearby Imola. Spring and autumn bring the most pleasant weather, and the village is best visited midweek when it is quietest, as weekends draw local crowds; the Muro Dipinto festival itself, held in odd-numbered September years, is the liveliest time to see artists at work. Arriving by late morning suits a tasting-and-lunch rhythm. For food, the surrounding hills produce Albana and Sangiovese wines, and trattorie in and around the village serve Romagnola staples such as passatelli, tagliatelle al ragù, and grilled meats with piadina; the Enoteca and village bars cover tastings and coffee. The Rocca and Enoteca charge modest entry and tasting fees (around €5 and €10-15) payable on arrival.
