Comacchio & Po Delta (from Ferrara)

Comacchio lies 50km east of Ferrara in the Po Delta of Emilia-Romagna, reached in about 45 minutes by bus from Ferrara (around €3 one way) or, more flexibly, by rented car (about €40 a day), which is the better option for exploring the surrounding wetlands. Often called the 'Little Venice' of the delta, Comacchio is a lagoon town threaded with canals and linked by ornate brick bridges, the most famous being the seventeenth-century Trepponti, a monumental five-arched stairway bridge that is the town's emblem. Visitors can wander the pastel-colored canal houses, see the Loggiato dei Cappuccini portico, and learn the town's eel-fishing heritage at the Manifattura dei Marinati, a restored eel-processing house. The real draw beyond the townscape is the Po Delta Regional Park, a UNESCO-listed mosaic of lagoons, salt pans, and reedbeds that ranks among Italy's most important wetland bird habitats; pink flamingos, herons, egrets, and avocets gather in large numbers from spring through autumn. A practical one-day arc is to arrive mid-morning, explore the canals and Trepponti, then take an organized lagoon boat tour (about €15-25) into the Valli di Comacchio for birdwatching, with the early morning or late afternoon offering the best wildlife activity and light. Spring and autumn are the prime seasons, when flamingo numbers peak and the heat is bearable; summer brings mosquitoes to the marshes, so repellent is essential. For food, Comacchio is defined by its eel, served marinated, grilled, or in risotto, alongside Adriatic clams and the local Vino delle Sabbie grown on sandy soils; canal-side trattorie and the marinati shop sell these specialties, and town bars cover a quick coffee or aperitivo. Boat tours and birdwatching excursions should be pre-booked in peak season, while the town itself can be explored freely on foot.
