Dozza Hilltop Village

Dozza is a hilltop medieval village 30 kilometres east of Bologna in the province of Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, perched above the Emilian plain on a limestone spur with views across vine-covered slopes to the flat horizon. The village is known for two distinct attractions: its remarkably complete medieval fortified core and the contemporary murals covering nearly every building facade. The Rocca Sforzesca, a 15th-century fortress dominating the village's highest point, was the seat of the Sforza family and later the Bentivoglio lords of Bologna. Today it houses the Enoteca Regionale dell'Emilia Romagna on its lower floors — one of the most comprehensive wine libraries in the region, with over 1,000 labels from all of Emilia-Romagna's DOC and DOCG zones available for tasting and purchase. The murals of Dozza began with the first Muro Dipinto festival in 1960, when Italian and international artists were invited to paint directly on the village walls. The festival recurs biennially in even-numbered years and has gradually accumulated over 100 large-format murals in a variety of styles from figurative realism to geometric abstraction, now covering almost every exterior wall in the historic centre. Walking the self-guided mural route, a map for which is available at the village entrance, takes 1–2 hours depending on pace. The combination of the wine library, the medieval castle, and the outdoor contemporary art makes Dozza unusual even by the high standards of Emilia-Romagna's historic villages. The village is best reached by car or taxi from Bologna, or by train and local bus from Imola.
