Comacchio & Po Delta Regional Park

Comacchio is a small fishing town in the province of Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, built on 13 small islands connected by bridges and canals, earning it the nickname 'the Little Venice of the Po Delta.' The historic centre clusters around the canal-side via with its colourful house fronts, the 17th-century Cathedral, and the remarkable Trepponti bridge (1634), a five-arched stairbridge that is the most photographed single structure in the Po Delta. The town's economy has been based on eel fishing in the brackish lagoons for at least two millennia; eel marinata (marinated eel) remains the defining local dish and is available in numerous restaurants and takeaway points around the canal. The surrounding Po Delta Regional Park (Parco Regionale del Delta del Po) covers approximately 52,000 hectares of lagoon, salt marsh, dune systems, and river islands across both the Emilia-Romagna and Veneto portions of the delta. The park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of Italy's most important wetland habitats, hosting around 300 bird species across the year. Greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) breed in the southern lagoons from April and are visible in large flocks through late summer and into October. The Stazione di Foce, the park's main nature visitor centre at the lagoon edge south of Comacchio, provides information on wildlife-watching routes and organises guided boat tours of the lagoon. Boat tours (€15–25 per person) are the best way to access the traditional eel harvesting stations (lavorieri) and observe flamingos and waders at close range. The area is most accessible and rewarding between March and October.
