Poseidon Thermal Gardens, Ischia

Poseidon Thermal Gardens spreads across the slope above Citara Bay near Forio, on the sunset-facing western coast of Ischia in Italy's Campania region. Opened in 1959, it ranks among the oldest and largest thermal parks in the Mediterranean, with terraced gardens that descend through pines and Mediterranean planting to a private stretch of sandy beach. The park harnesses Ischia's volcanic geothermal energy through around twenty pools, including its celebrated set of main thermal basins, fed by mineral-rich spring water held at temperatures from a cool 22°C to a near-scalding 42°C. The graduated layout lets visitors work through hot-and-cold contrast bathing at their own pace, finishing in the sea below. Among the signature features are a natural sauna carved into the volcanic rock, where steam rises directly from the geothermal source, and a Kneipp circuit for stimulating circulation. A treatment pavilion offers fango mud wraps prepared from the island's thermal mud, hydromassage, facials and therapeutic massage, all drawing on the curative reputation that has made Ischia a thermal destination since antiquity. Facilities include changing rooms, several bars and a beachside restaurant, sun terraces and direct beach access at Citara, one of the better swimming beaches on the island. Poseidon operates seasonally, generally from mid-April to the end of October, and works on a day-admission model: a full- or half-day ticket (roughly €35-42 for a full day) covers entry to all the thermal pools, gardens and beach, with no reservation required for general access. Spa treatments and massages are booked separately at the on-site wellness centre, where the menu can be reviewed on arrival or in advance. Because the pools sit on an exposed terraced hillside, the park is busiest in the middle of the day and on weekends in high summer, while mornings are quieter and cooler. Its westward orientation makes the late afternoon especially scenic, with the warm pools looking out over the water as the sun sets behind Citara Bay.
